I just bought the Grateful Dead album "Terrapin Station" on iTunes since it was only $7 and I had some money to burn.

While this thread is not actually interesting, at least it isn't off-topic.

A great album. It is definitely my favorite studio. Some people have stated it as overproduced. I think even Hunter said the addition of the LSO was too much. But it was released about when I started liking them and went to my 1st show in Philly, 04-22-77, so I admit to considerable bias.
For me, Terrapin lyrics really hit home They are my favorite from Hunter.

Thanks for the dead related post.

I think it's a great album too, but I essentially only like two of the songs on it, estimated and terrapin. Samson and Delilah's fun but not that interesting. Passenger kind of annoys me. Sunrise definitely annoys me. And Dancin' in the Streets makes me want to kill myself. When it first came on I burst out laughing, and not in a good way.

But the remaining two are so good, it more than makes up for the (for me) silly stuff in between.

haha I'm right there with ya. those lyrics to terrapin are somethin else though. They've really stayed with me through the years.

It's funny that this thread came up today because I had a somewhat heated debate with my friend last night about the lyrics to lady with a fan. He was saying that Hunter tried to portray the soldier as being the wiser party, and I was saying that Hunter was intentionally ambiguous as to who was wiser (soldier or sailor) because he wanted the listener/reader to make that choice, which (obvious to me) there is no clear choice and that's the point: life is a series of compromises; perfect doesnt' exist. 1) risk your life and possibly get the prize/possibly die, or 2) play it safe and live but don't get the prize. Neither is right. There is no right; there are just different compromises to better fit different people.

Personally, I'm a combination of the two. But if I HAD to pick one....

sailor.

or, win the "prize" and spend a life of misery with the selfish bitch...she's the one who carelessly threw the damn thing into the lions den, so she can fucking well go get it herself!

or, maybe the 2 dressed up as a 9 and her fan are symbols for other symbols (money, power, vanity) that people have tendency to relentlessly pursue at all costs, even at the cost of their own happiness and their own very existence (and that of the rest of the planet)

the Lady With The Fan jam is based on the Lydian mode (scale) an uncommon and unstable mode due to it's raised 4th degree (the note B natural in the key of F) creating an ambiguous tonal center...fitting with the mystery

I wonder how Hunter's original version changes things and why Jerry didn't use it. I even tracked down Ian & Sylvia and New Lost City Ramblers before the Hunter record popped by.

Being born into this world is a bit like going into the lion's den, and real prizes are expensive. Easy things might have to be all pulled out after the savoy truffle.

But yeah, caution. Help hands and love but it's really up to you. I like Jerry's comment about being someone's messiah or god, about when they start to go for nails.

It seems to me that Lady with a Fan is really about the storyteller as much as about the story. That is what makes it unique, it adds that extra layer to it. That distance makes the judgment about the soldier and the sailor less relevant than the telling of the story.

Don't know if that made any sense.

Awesome, I love collecting vinyl, but Grateful Dead records are really hard to find where I live. The record shops here mainly have classical/easy listening vinyl, as opposed to popular music.
